Solutions Glossary
Edge: Edge solutions are closest to the subscriber. Typical throughput speeds are less than 155 Mbps. Transport technologies used include T1/E1, T3/E3, STS-1/STM-0, STS-3/STM-1, 10/100 Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet.
Access: Access solutions are located in the Central Offices of ILECs and RBOCs. Typical throughput speeds are less than 1 Gbps. Transport technologies in this category are extremely diverse, ranging from T1/E1, T3/E3, and 10/100 Ethernet to STS-1/STM-0, STS-3/STM-1, STS-12/STM-4, and Gigabit Ethernet.
Metro: Metro solutions require throughput speeds between 622 Mbps and 10 Gbps. Transport technologies range from STS-12/STM-4, STS-48/STM-16 to STS-192/STM-64, Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
Core: Core solutions require throughput in excess of 2.5 Gbps, utilizing SONET/SDH and optics as the transport vehicles. Typical transmission speeds are in excess of STS-48/STM-16 (2.5 Gbps).
