Corporate Vision
Bringing Intelligence to the Edge
Within five years, we believe, the core of the world's communications
networks will be based on optical technology with IP or ATM as the dominant
protocol. The edge or "access space" will be based on silicon technology
with ATM as the dominant protocol. The optical core will provide requisite
transmission capacity while, at the edge, flexible, intelligent, multi-protocol
access solutions will provide the vehicles for creating and delivering
new services.
Concentrating intelligence at the edge of the network makes sense because
here, intelligent access systems can mediate between end users, who want
flexibility, and the network core, which must remain stable to function
reliably.
If power to change the network is allowed to migrate all the way out
to end users, chaos will likely ensue. Conversely, if changing the network
requires changing the core, the consequence will be forbidding costs or
stifling rigidity. For all these reasons, the edge is the natural nexus
for enabling and managing network change.
So over the next five years, a wealth of new intelligence must be developed
and deployed at the edge of the networks. TranSwitch has the intellect
to put it there. Developing next generation access-focused Connectivity
Engines is now our top corporate priority.

Accessing opportunity.
The access solutions market is huge and receptive, and TranSwitch is
particularly well positioned to serve it.We are the industry's leading
provider of products with the specific attributes the access space requires:
programmability, on-chip intelligence, and multi-service functionality.
However, it is one thing to pioneer these attributes individually, and
quite another to gather, integrate and synergize them all in products
that also advance the standards for space and power efficiency, reliability,
cost/performance, and ease of use.
Moreover, this is not a job that we or anyone else can do once and for
all. We must continually advance on every front, and launch successive
product generations. There is no resting place or finish line in our industry
and era.
Technologically, we know the task is doable because we're doing it. But
sustained success depends on consistent mastery of a human challenge.
That is, we must attract, retain, inspire, and apply the creativity of
some of the world's brightest, most highly sought scientists, designers,
and engineers. There is not enough top talent in the world to go around,
nor enough money to keep such stars in positions that do not excite them.
So how does TranSwitch approach this challenge? By making it a conscious
focus of our corporate culture and our day-to-day lives.

While TranSwitch needs and seeks specific skills, our most important
resource is raw intellect: people who are curious, creative, flexible,

This is why you will find TranSwitch operations in such educationally
rich locations as Boston, MA; Milpitas, CA; Raleigh, NC; New Delhi, India;
Leuven, Belgium; and Lausanne, Switzerland in addition to our Shelton,
CT world headquarters.
TranSwitch strategic partners such as Onex and Optix have created their
own intellectual centers of gravity in places like Boston, MA and Tel
Aviv, Israel. These organizations attract the leaders of tomorrow by being
vigorously engaged in leading edge developments today.

Gaining global advantages.
Global presence gives TranSwitch a better window on world markets, economies,
and cultures than a centralized operation would afford us. It also allows
our employees to work where they feel most at home.
Because we are distributed around the world, yet must collaborate closely
with one another and our customers, we make extensive use of internet
and intranet facilities. This keeps our fingers on the pulse of the infrastructure

Those who manage TranSwitch have come up through the ranks of enginneering
and design.We have been team members and team leaders.We know first hand
that empowerment, not bureaucracy, cultivates creative thinking. So rather
than impose a heavy hand on initiative, we seek team players whose own
sense of mission promotes the common good through uncommonly high achievement.
Strictly speaking, we rarely tell TranSwitch employees what to do. Rather,
we tell them what we need - and then give them plenty of room to surprise
us (and often, even themselves) with their creativity.

Fostering a sense of family.
Early on, we discovered that addressing the needs of our team members
as individuals is not enough. Most of our employees are also spouses and
parents. To do their best work and feel supported, they need to be assured
that their families are part of the TranSwitch family.
Toward this end, TranSwitch maintains regular programs ranging from family
road trips, picnics, and parties to children's art shows, college scholarships,
and internships for high school and college age children of employees.
Because talents, turns of mind, and common interests often run in families,
we have a number of employee families in which two generations are working
at TranSwitch. There is a happy irony in this. We literally search the
world for talent, and then discover it sitting at our own dinner tables.

Cultivating lifelong learning.
TranSwitch encourages its team members to place a high priority on continuing
education and career growth. This takes many forms, including classes
supported by TranSwitch tuition reimbursement, professional seminars,
and membership in industry organizations and standards committees, all
reflecting our common commitment to lifelong learning.
